sugar; 16P1 sacks of coffee, and no u.olassss came in over the railroa-d froii. the northern and eastern markets. New Orleans also formed our chief market for rice, pitch, fish, tin, oranges, and raisins. Thus the immediate severance of coiiuaercial relations with the South forced Evansville to look elsewhere for a market in those commod¬ ities which she had formerly gotten from New Orleans. Evansville became a very important distributing point in the North for such staples as coffee, sugar, and molasses. Referring to the clearances of the Wabash and Erie Canal for 1859, the last year for which such reports are available, one can see that 93,363 pounds of coffee, 95,539 pounds of sugar, and 350,508 pounds of molasses cleared Evansville's canal port for the northern markets.
